Muslims Suspecting NYPD Spying to Boycott Mayor Bloomberg's Interfaith Breakfast

Several Muslim leaders who suspect that the NYPD has spied upon and attempted to infiltrate Muslim neighborhoods have rejected invitations to Bloomberg's annual year-end interfaith breakfast. The Associated Press has reported that imams and activists wrote Bloomberg to express their concern over his response to the AP's own series of stories detailing the NYPD's intelligence-gathering methods and collaboration with the CIA. "We seek your clear, unambiguous, public support for the rights and privacy of all New Yorkers, including Muslims; and a condemnation of all policies that profile and target communities and community groups solely based on their religion or the color of their skin."

Japan says it, India close to deciding dollar swap pact

Japan and India are in the final stages of deciding on a dollar swap agreement and expect to reach agreement during Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda's visit to India this week, Japan's finance minister said on Tuesday.

An earlier $3 billion arrangement came into force in 2008 but expired in June. The Nikkei business newspaper reported on Sunday that the new one would be set at $10 billion.

Further financial cooperation as well as Japanese support for infrastructure in India will be a key focus at talks between the leaders of the two countries, Finance Minister Jun Azumi told a news conference.

Azumi also said he expects Japan's exports will pick up early next year if the European economy stabilizes and currency levels reflect Japan's economic fundamentals.

India Ink: An Indian Fan's Perspective of Australian Test Cricket

For an Indian fan, test cricket in Australia is about waking up at 5 a.m. in order to watch the first session of play with the television on mute so as to not wake the rest of the family. It is about watching the Boxing Day test match in Melbourne and soaking in the tradition even if it is from thousands of miles away. It is about wondering how something as ubiquitous as the wind can be called ?the fremantle doctor? during test matches in Perth.

Australian test matches often seem like the perfect contest between bat and ball ? unlike the ones we have back in India, where the battles are often loaded in favor of the batsmen. It?s about watching young men take their first giant steps in international cricket, young captains going into battle leading from the front, or men returning to set the record straight. It is about an Australian opposition that is relentless, proud and will inevitably fight back, even if you hammered them the day before.

My interest in cricket started at the age of seven with the Indian tour of Australia in 1991. I used to sit down and watch the days? highlights on the national broadcaster Doordarshan with my grandfather. And it seemed like the television suddenly came to life every evening ? the dull morose commentary we were used to replaced by commentators going ballistic every time a wicket fell; the shoddy camera work replaced by new and innovative ways of admiring a Tendulkar straight drive. I was hooked!

In terms of the game I simply couldn?t understand why Indian batsmen couldn?t cope against fast bowlers with strange facial paint. (Incredibly, an exception was an 18-year-old Sachin Tendulkar). Eight years later it was the same story as Steve Waugh?s champion Australian side dominated the Indian team, but by that time I knew better.

It is after three years that the Indian cricket team will launch its latest attempt to conquer the land down under. Starting Monday, India will play Australia in four test matches, followed by two T20 games (with each side batting for 20 overs at the most) and a triangular series with Sri Lanka as the third team. Despite the presence of the shorter formats of the sport, all the excitement is around the four test matches, where each match can last up to five days. The two teams have had to relinquish their status as the number one ranked team (now held by England) in the recent past and now face a long climb back to the top.

Both the teams, Indian and Australian are evenly matched, although India?s injuries in the bowling line up may give the home team the edge. Australia is now a team in transition and has been fairly inconsistent at its performance since the retirement of some of their greatest test players. India is not far away from having to go through a painful transition of its own, considering that some of their best players including Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid are in their late 30s.

In 2004, things had changed dramatically with India coming ever so close to winning the series down under for the first time. The team, much like the country, seemed to be on an upswing, with all the batsmen pulling off unforgettable performances. Under the leadership of captain Saurav Ganguly and coach John Wright, the team had a new found resolve and determination. My friends and I would follow scores through SMS updates on our Nokia 3310s ? safely tucked under our desks in our classrooms in college. We marveled at how opener Virender Sehwag?s score seemed to increase by at least 20 runs every time we checked during his unforgettable 195 at Melbourne. After a hard fought 4 match series, the two teams had to share the spoils having won one match each.

The series in 2008 was extremely disappointing ? with controversial events on the field completely overshadowing some very inspiring performances. Except for some very questionable umpiring decisions and a dramatic batting collapse on the final day, India could have come back with a share of the spoils. By the end of the series, the accusations and counter-accusations of racism between players had left a bad taste in the mouth, and the cricket itself took the back seat. Interestingly, the two men at the center of that fracas, scandal Harbhajan Singh and Andrew Symonds, are not going to be a part of the new series.

The best way to watch this year?s test matches is probably to have few if any expectations. Barring a dramatic turnaround in the fitness of Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma, it is hard to see how India can get a win out of this series; but then stranger things have happened. Australia is going through a transition and have a fairly inexperienced bowling attack themselves.

This is almost certainly the last time we will see Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman in Australia because of their age. Their reputations as among cricket?s finest batsmen of all time have been forged by their repeated successes in Australia. In a way, Laxman?s career really kicked off in 1999, with an unforgettable knock of 167 at Sydney and Dravid?s cemented his career with the 233 at Adelaide.

The Australians themselves have recognized these fine cricketers with generous ovations nearly every time they play in Australia. It would be great to see them finally conquer Australia and add the perfect icing to some remarkable test careers. However, what the sport really needs right now, after a few months of meaningless matches, is a great series to get more fans hooked on test cricket.

Microsoft to ban virtual guns on Xbox Live

The right to bear arms does not extend into the world of virtual game console avatars.

Even though the Xbox 360 is the place to go for bloody shoot-em-ups and FPS games that push the M-rated boundaries, Microsoft is apparently against the idea of cartoony guns for your Xbox Live avatar.

The software giant hasn't officially announced this seemingly hypocritical decision yet, but third-party publisher Epic Games has.

The publisher's community manager, who goes by the name Raczilla, wrote in an official blog post that all gun items will be removed from Xbox Live's Avatar Marketplace in January.

The post was written to inform users that Epic's Lancer and Hammerburst items will be removed as of the new year. "A new policy goes into effect for all gun-like avatar items on the Marketplace, so get them while they?re hot," Raczilla wrote.

There are already some draconian restrictions on what player avatars are allowed to do. They can't smoke or inflict any kind of violence, although of course that kind of content is commonplace in most of the Xbox 360's hottest selling games.

The policies for Xbox Live are so strict because avatars, usernames, etc, are universal. They need to appeal to the lowest common denominator. Someone playing Call of Duty would expect to see guns and blood, but someone playing an innocent game like Kinect Sports would not.

So if you want to give your Xbox Live avatar a weapon so you can terrorize your friends, you better head to the marketplace and buy it stat.

Lions in, Eagles out, heading into NFL finales

The Lions and Falcons are in; the Eagles and Bears are out. Cincinnati is closing in on a playoff berth, while the Jets and Raiders need some help.

All part of a wild closing act to the NFL season.

With one game remaining before teams hunker down for their finales next week (Atlanta at New Orleans on Monday night), the most notable news was made by Detroit.

The last time the Lions were a force, Barry Sanders was in their backfield. Sanders retired after the 1998 season, and Detroit made the postseason the next year then plummeted to the bottom of the league. In 2008, the Lions posted the only 0-16 record in NFL history.

Now, they're in the chase for the championship. Their 38-10 rout of San Diego secured an NFC wild card.

"Once you get to the playoffs, it's anybody's ballgame," defensive end Cliff Avril said. "The city of Detroit needs it. They've been waiting on us to win for a while. It's such a football town and we haven't been winning, so it's huge."

At 10-5, the Lions join North champion Green Bay, West winner San Francisco, South leader New Orleans, and the Atlanta Falcons in the postseason parade. Either Dallas or the New York Giants also will get there ? they meet next Sunday night at the Meadowlands in a winner-take-all matchup for the NFC East title.

The Falcons secured a playoff spot on Sunday night when Green Bay beat Chicago 35-21 and eliminated the Bears in the process.

So if the Cowboys and Giants, both 8-7, are battling for the NFC East crown, where does that leave the Eagles, the most disappointing team in the league?

Dreaming of the playoffs.

The team that "won" free agency after the NFL lockout by signing such prizes as cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, defensive end Jason Babin and receiver Steve Smith needs to beat Washington next Sunday to finish at .500. Not much return on the dollar for Philly.

"If we had gotten into the playoffs, we would have definitely done some damage," Michael Vick said after the Eagles (7-8) beat Dallas 20-7 on Saturday. "It's unfortunate we didn't. That's the game of football. We made some mistakes early (this season) and got behind in the win-loss column. But we're just happy we're finishing strong."

Finishing strong but going to the playoffs: New England, which won its seventh in a row by rallying from a 17-0 hole to beat Miami 27-24. It was the 10th time this season a team has come back from at least 17 points to win, the most in a single NFL season.

"All the while, we never gave up on one another and never said anything negative to one another," defensive lineman Vince Wilfork said. "Going down 17-0 is a pretty big deficit, but once again this team showed its character."

The AFC East champion Patriots (12-3) would get home-field advantage for the playoffs by beating Buffalo next weekend.

Green Bay (14-1) grabbed the home-field edge in the NFC with its win over Chicago on Sunday night.

That's the simple stuff. As for the chaotic, well, just one look at the AFC wild-card race after Saturday's results can make your head spin.

Suffice to say that the Bengals (9-6) are in control. But if they lose to Baltimore (11-4), which needs a victory to clinch the AFC North over Pittsburgh (also 11-4), it brings three other teams into play for the final AFC berth: Tennessee, Oakland and the New York Jets.

The Jets (8-7), like Philadelphia, are one of the NFL's major flops this year. For much of the stretch drive, the Jets were in charge of the chase for the second AFC wild card. They kept messing up, though, and after Saturday's ugly 29-14 loss to the Giants, they barely are relevant.

"We play this game to win the Super Bowl," star cornerback Darrelle Revis said. "So even to be talking about that excites me, and I think it excites the team for us to go out there and try to win the Super Bowl. That's what it's about. It's not about nothing else."

Unless everyone else in the AFC wild-card scramble loses, Revis and company can forget the Super Bowl this winter.

Among the notable individual performance in Week 16:

? Reggie Bush went over 1,000 yards rushing for the first time in his career, gaining 113 in Miami's loss to New England.

? The Rams' Steven Jackson ran for 103 yards in a 27-0 loss to Pittsburgh to go over 1,000 on the season for the seventh straight year.

? Seattle's Marshawn Lynch scored the first TD rushing against San Francisco all season, a 4-yarder. It was the 11th straight game in which he had a touchdown.

? 49ers kicker David Akers set an NFL record with 42 field goals for the season, including four in the 19-17 win at Seattle.

? Carolina's Cam Newton broke Peyton Manning's NFL rookie record for yards passing in a season with 3,893 as the Panthers routed Tampa Bay 48-16.

? Denver's Willis McGahee joined Ricky Watters as the only players to reach 1,000 yards rushing with three teams. He previously did it with Buffalo and Baltimore.

The Evolution of Advertising: From Stone Carving to the Old Spice Guy (Mashable)

In 2011, online advertising has beaten out print and radio as the number two place ad dollars are spent. But how did it come to be that way? Four thousand years ago Ancient Egyptians invented advertising by carving public notices in steel. Fast forward to the present day, and in-text online ads, Facebook Like-driven campaigns and viral commercials, such as the Old Spice Guy, are common form. This illustrated timeline, created by Infolinks, takes a walk down advertising's memory lane.

[More from Mashable: Google Rolls Out Clever New Ad Featuring the Muppets [VIDEO]]

The evolution from steal to digital took many turns along its way, such as print fliers hoping to get young men to fight in the Revolutionary War, billboards spurred by the rise of automobiles, electric banner ads following the invention of the light bulb (Times Square's first went up in 1882) and direct marketing with the nascent postal service.

But we don't want to give everything away. Take a look at the graphic below. Do you think any of these older forms of advertising would be successful today? Let us know in the comments.

Mayor Rick Mueller appointed to Military Affairs Commission by Governor Brewer

The following is a press release from the city of Sierra Vista:

Last week, Mayor Rick Mueller attended his first Arizona Military Affairs Commission meeting in Phoenix. Appointed by Governor Brewer in October, Mayor Mueller is one of several members representing local elected officials within communities impacted by a military installation.

Governor Brewer personally shared her vision of the Commission?s role at the meeting, emphasizing the need to preserve and enhance the capabilities at Arizona?s military installations and protect the $9.2 billion impact on the State economy.

Originally established in 2004 by Executive Order, the Commission was reconstituted by the Legislature last year. The Commission advises the Governor and Legislature on all matters affecting the operational viability of Arizona?s military facilities, and also recommends projects and programs for funding by the Military Installation Fund. They last met over two years ago.

?I am honored to be appointed to this Commission?, said Mayor Mueller. ?I am confident that I can contribute to state-wide policies and actions needed to insure Arizona?s military installations, and the private sector businesses that support them, are strengthened.?

The 15-member Commission, staffed by the Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Affairs, meets at least annually to address and make recommendations on issues regarding military installations, training routes and restricted airspace. Members are charged with coordinating efforts to protect Arizona?s current military missions; managing installation issues such as property encroachment; handling quality of life issues for servicemen and women; and recommending modifications and responses to the State?s military missions.

This 9.7" Kindle DX Is Your Oh-My-God-This-Thing-Is-Huge Deal of the Day [Dealzmodo]

I'm going to buy this giant-sized, refurbished Kindle DX e-Reader for Kyle Wagner for Christmas. Why? Not because I particularly love the idea of a 10-inch e-Reader, but because in his review of the latest Kindle, Kyle complained about the placement of the buttons making his delicate little hands cramp up. I figure if I get him a Kindle with a bigger screen, more words will fit on the screen and he'll have to turn the page less. But who knows, the added weight of the DX might actually make his delicate little arms fall off. Then again, at $200 (which is $180 off its normal price), it just might be worth the spectacle. -AC More »

Israel backs aid to Palestinian Authority

In a dramatic public shift that appears to lower the intensity of the simmering diplomatic conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, the Israeli government is backing a strings-attached compromise that would restore American aid to the Palestinian Authority.

House Republicans have called for cutting off the P.A. over its push for international recognition through the United Nations, over the objections of many Democrats and the White House, and over the reported private objections of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The compromise proposal would restore the aid as long as the Palestinians ramp down their diplomatic efforts.

And in a statement from Ambassador Michael Oren today, the Israeli support for continued aid to the Palestinian Authority ?its day-to-day partner in governing the West Bank ? has become public. Oren said in a statement provided POLITICO by an aide:

The Israeli government would welcome the decision to lift the congressional hold on U.S. funding for the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank.?We appreciate that the hold was placed to demonstrate to the Palestinians the consequences of their attempts to declare statehood unilaterally at the United Nations, without making lasting peace with Israel. The Israeli government's position follows a decision by the Obama administration and Congress to declare specific consequences, including the closure of the PLO office in Washington and the withholding of future funding for the Palestinian Authority, and the fact that the Palestinians have refrained from additional U.N. initiatives.

We view these measures as essential for returning the Palestinians to direct talks without preconditions, as endorsed by the Quartet. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stands by his commitment to negotiate all core issues leading to a viable and permanent two-state solution.

?Vocal? app lets users control a Mac with an iPhone 4S (Appolicious)

Software that can take dictation from your voice isn?t exactly new, but with the popularity of Apple?s voice-controlled personal assistant software Siri in its iPhone 4S, the idea of using your voice to control your devices has become cool again.

And the voice-control technology in the iPhone 4S is actually pretty impressive. It?s that technology that?s leveraged by a new app called Vocal. It uses the iPhone 4S and your voice to enact commands or take dictation on your Mac ? in a way, bringing Siri-like capabilities to other computers. The app?s primary function is to let you speak to your iPhone and then sends the transcript of your dictation to your computer using a local Wi-Fi connection, but it has other uses as well.

As Macworld explains, Vocal uses a companion program you?ll need to download and run on your Mac to work. Once you?ve got that, firing up Vocal on your iPhone should allow the two devices to connect to one another, and you?re off.

Vocal uses the same dictation capabilities that your iPhone 4S has built in system-wide, but it operates a little differently than Siri, which is designed to cut out if you pause for too long while dictating an email or text message. Unlike Siri, you can?t activate Vocal with your voice, you have to hit a button to start and stop dictation or issuing commands. But once you hit the ?Done? button, your command or text is transferred automatically.

And the voice control elements of Vocal are pretty deep. The app can let you speak to control iTunes, dictate tweets on social networking site Twitter, or send emails, among other things like searching the Internet, starting a print job or using Mac apps like Dictionary. These are things Siri can do on your iPhone 4S, but if you want to use your Mac?s capabilities for those services, Vocal is the bridge you need.

Siri and the iPhone 4S aren?t without their issues, even if the voice recognition software is impressive. That?s why Siri is still a ?beta? release. Apple is working out the kinks with the software to make it better. So don?t expect Vocal to work flawlessly; voice recognition software has come a long way, after all, but it still has a long way to go. But Vocal does take one of the coolest features about Apple?s latest smartphone and give you the power to use it with your computer. That?s certainly cool, and it?ll only run you $2.

Romney begins making closing argument to voters (AP)

BEDFORD, N.H. ? Sharpening his message ahead of voting in Iowa and New Hampshire, Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney on Tuesday accused President Barack Obama of deepening the economic crisis and backing policies that will redistribute wealth instead of creating equal opportunity for people to do well.

Romney's allies, meanwhile, continued to aggressively criticize Newt Gingrich, his chief rival for the nomination. In Iowa, Gingrich lashed out and accused Romney of a "negative smear campaign."

Romney, a former businessman, told voters in an evening speech that his policies would turn the U.S. into an "opportunity society" while Obama's vision for an "entitlement society" would make more people dependent on government welfare.

"We will not surrender our dreams to the failures of this president. We are bigger than the misguided policies and weak leadership of one man. America is bigger than President Obama's failures," Romney said. "This America of long unemployment lines and small dreams is not the America you and I love. ... These troubled years are President Obama's legacy, but they are not our future."

Romney said that Obama "believes that government should create equal outcomes. In an entitlement society, everyone receives the same or similar rewards, regardless of education, effort and willingness to take risk."

Romney's message contrasts with the argument the Democratic president has begun to articulate for his re-election, in which he calls for a society that offers "fair play, a fair shot and a fair share." Obama argues that Republicans put the interests of the wealthy above the middle class.

"Giving more handouts to millionaires, billionaires and large corporations and making the middle class foot the bill are the same flawed policies that led to the economic crisis in the first place," Obama campaign manager Jim Messina told New Hampshire reporters.

Romney planned to remain focused on his effort in New Hampshire as his allies criticized Gingrich on Iowa's airwaves.

Restore Our Future, a special political action committee, or "super PAC," that backs Romney, launched a caustic ad tying Gingrich to Freddie Mac, the quasi-government mortgage company, and House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi. The spot also hits Gingrich for ethics violations and criticizes his record on abortion.

Campaigning in Iowa, Gingrich accused Romney of allowing a "negative smear campaign" fueled by a super PAC. He called on Romney to demand that ads run on his behalf by such groups be positive. Gingrich said Romney's comments aimed at distancing himself from the anti-Gingrich PAC ads were misleading and false.

Romney had refused earlier Tuesday to disavow the group's ads, saying it would be illegal for him to coordinate with the super PAC. He did say that such groups are a "disaster" and have made a "mockery" of the presidential campaign.

"Campaign finance law has made a mockery of our political campaign season," Romney said on MSNBC. "We really ought to let campaigns raise the money they need and just get rid of these super PACs."

A 2010 Supreme Court decision paved the way for such groups to accept unlimited amounts of money from donors. The political campaigns are limited to accepting $2,500 per donor.

Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, was using Tuesday's speech to open four straight days of campaigning in New Hampshire, which holds the nation's first primary on Jan. 10. It's a must-win contest in the campaign strategy designed by the Romney team.

Two weeks remain until voting begins Jan. 3 with the leadoff caucuses in Iowa, though Romney will campaign in New Hampshire through Christmas, a sign of the state's importance to his political strategy.

Science Books from my Childhood

Originally posted on July 17, 2006.

Are there any children?s books that are dear to you, either as a child or a parent, and especially ones that perhaps strike a chord with those from a science sensibility? Just curious really. And it doesn?t have to be a picture book, doesn?t even have to be a children?s book ? just a book that, for whatever reason, worked for the younger mind set.

Here is my list of childhood favourites, the books that turned me on to science ? a list that reflects the time and place where I grew up:

As a little kid, I have practically memorized the 1971 translation of the 1968 book The new golden treasury of natural history by Bertha Morris Parker (under the title of Riznica Prirode). This is where I learned all the names of prehistoric creatures like Dynichtys, trilobites, dinosaurs and prehistoric mammals. This is where I learned about the Solar system and about evolution. And everything else. This is the book that started it all.

At about the same time (very early childhood), I also had and read repeatedly Our Friend the Atom by Heinz Haber, where I learned the basic physics (which I, for the most part, forgot since then).

I have already written about the importance to my naturalist development of The prince and his ants (Ciondolino) by Ricardo Vamba aka Luigi Bertelli.

I also had a couple of books by Alfred Edmund Brehm, including his most famous Brehm?s Life of animals: A complete natural history for popular home instruction and for the use of schools, which I used, later in school, as a source for some early papers/reports about animals.

Then, I swallowed a number of translated books by Gerald Durrell and his Russian counterpart, Vera Caplina.

Later, I graduated to works by Konrad Lorenz and, at the age of 13, my first attempt at reading Darwin?s Origin Of Species.

Finally, probably the most important kids? books I had were a trilogy by Dr.Zivko Kostic (which I see has been reissued): ?Between Play and Physics?, ?Between Play and Chemistry? and ?Between Play and Mathematics?. Each of the books had a story ? a bunch of kids (mostly boys!!!! ? reflecting their origin in the 1950s and 1960s) having a club, meeting regularly and doing experiments or, even more often, using their knowledge to pull pranks on each other and the rest of the community.

But the story was restricted to just a few places scattered around the book. Most of each book was devoted to about 150 ?experiments?. I have not just read each of the books many times, but I have also tried to do many of the things described within. Math was easy ? paper and pencil was all one needed for most of it. Chemistry was great fun, but it was hard to come up with chemicals (probably impossible in the here and now). So, I mostly did the physics stuff, using materials easily found around the house ? some string, a glass of water, a pencil, a coat-hanger and a bottle cork. That was great fun.

More importantly, each book is broken into chapters, each chapter covering a particular topic or sub-discipline. And each chapter started with a brief and fascinating history of that field. Archimedes. Mendeleyev. Newton. They were all in there, in anecdotes and coming alive on the pages of the book.

But the greatest fun was when I got to meet the author when I was about 10 years old or so. For a kid in Yugoslavia at the time, it was equivalent of you getting to meet Carl Sagan or Isaak Asimov. My idol, in flesh and blood! And not just for a few seconds at a book signing ? he came to visit us for lunch and coffee at my grandparents? summer cottage.

So I listened with awe to his stories and he answered about a zillion questions I had for him. He is still alive and my mother said she was in touch with him recently. She just bought me the three-book set of Kostic?s books. They were re-issued about three years ago and are now in EVERY school library in Serbia, as well as favourite prizes to give to good students at end-of-the-year ceremonies.

Perhaps they may be fun to translate. Or, I can do something that I wanted to do for decades now ? write the fourth volume: ?Between Play and Biology?.

Market gains as data overshadows IMF warning (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Stocks rose on Thursday as signs of strength in the economy and higher-than-expected profit at FedEx outweighed a stark warning from the IMF about inaction over Europe's debt crisis.

Trading was volatile before Friday's quadruple witching expiration when not only equity options expire, but also stock index futures, stock index options and individual stock futures.

Stocks pared some of their gains after Christine Lagarde, the head of the International Monetary Fund, said the world economic outlook is "quite gloomy" and will require action by all countries to head off an escalating crisis that carries risks of a global depression.

But investors were cheered by the latest data that suggested the U.S. economy was showing modest growth.

Applications for unemployment insurance fell to a 3-1/2 year low, while a gauge of New York state manufacturing activity rose to its highest level since May and a separate measure of factory activity in the mid-Atlantic region showed a surge in new orders.

The market's gains were concentrated in defensive sectors such as utilities, suggesting uncertainty was causing risk-takers to put their portfolios in neutral as the week draws to an end, said Chad Morganlander, portfolio manager at Stifel, Nicolaus & Co in Florham Park, New Jersey.

"Unfortunately austerity without a plan for structural changes will cap economic growth and potentially could bleed into earnings. Going into the new year, portfolio managers are squaring their books for that scenario," Morganlader said.

"There's a continued rotation into safety and stability in a global austerity environment."

The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) was up 69.32 points, or 0.59 percent, at 11,892.80. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (.SPX) was up 6.57 points, or 0.54 percent, at 1,218.39. The Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) was up 6.82 points, or 0.27 percent, at 2,546.13.

FedEx Corp (FDX.N) shares shot up 7.2 percent to $82.87 after the package delivery company, seen as a bellwether of economic activity, reported stronger-than-expected quarterly profit.

The news from FedEx was welcome after a number of high-profile companies warned about revenues and profits in recent days. On Thursday, Honeywell International (HON.N) said Europe's slowing economy would take a toll on orders. But Honeywell's stock rose 1.2 percent to $52.16 after it forecast profit in line with expectations.

On Wednesday, Wall Street fell for a third day to its lowest level in two weeks with the market highly sensitive to developments in Europe.

Big-cap technology shares slipped, including Apple Inc (AAPL.O) off 0.2 percent to $379.33 and International Business machines (IBM.N), which fell 0.5 percent to $187.77.

Novellus Systems Inc (NVLS.O) jumped 17.3 percent to $40.72 a day after it agreed to be bought by larger rival Lam Research Corp (LRCX.O) for $3.3 billion in stock.

Michael Kors Holdings Ltd (KORS.N) shares jumped 22 percent to $24.37 in their debut on the New York Stock Exchange after the luxury goods company went public at $20 per share on Wednesday, above the expected range. Earlier Thursday, the stock climbed as much as 25 percent to a session high at $25.23.

15 charged in Chicago for gun trafficking to gangs (Reuters)

CHICAGO (Reuters) ? Prosecutors in Chicago on Thursday said they charged fifteen men with gun trafficking as part of a crackdown on illegal gun sales to gangs.

According to the indictments and criminal complaints, the men were allegedly part of a ring that purchased handguns, shotguns and assault rifles outside of Illinois and transported them to Chicago.

The defendants then allegedly sold the weapons for between $250 and $1600 each on the city's west and south sides to buyers they believed were gang members but who were in fact undercover police officers.

Thirteen of the defendants were arrested on Wednesday by members of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Joint Task Force on Gangs as well as officers from the Chicago Police Department.

Two others avoided capture and are now the subjects of a nationwide manhunt, the FBI said.

(AP) ? Alarming financial news flowed out of Europe in a torrent Friday, just a week after the EU leaders struck a deal they thought would contain the continent's debt crisis.

The bombardment shredded hopes of a lasting solution to the turmoil that is endangering the euro ? the currency used by 17 European nations ? and threatening the entire global economy.

In quick succession:

? The Fitch Ratings agency announced it was considering further cuts to the credit scores of six eurozone nations ? heavyweights Italy and Spain, as well as Belgium, Cyprus, Ireland and Slovenia. It said all six could face downgrades of one or two notches.

? Ireland's economy shrunk again much deeper than had been expected, with its third-quarter gross domestic product falling 1.9 percent. Ireland is one of three eurozone nations kept solvent only by an international bailout.

? Bankers and hedge funds were balking in talks about forgiving 50 percent of Greece's massive debts, a key issue in the debate over Greece's second rescue bailout.

? The red ink in Spain's regional governments surged 22 percent in the last year, endangering the central government's efforts to cut overall Spanish debt.

? France, the second-largest eurozone economy after Germany, warned that it faced at least a temporary recession next year.

? The euro hovered Friday just above $1.30, a cent higher than its 11-month low.

On the positive side, Fitch said France should keep its top AAA credit rating even though the country's debt load is projected to rise through 2014. Italian lawmakers overwhelmingly passed Premier Mario Monti's new austerity package in a confidence vote, even though many still objected to its pension reforms.

French officials and investors had feared that France could get downgraded, which would have immediate repercussions for the entire eurozone. France and Germany's AAA credit ratings underpin the rating for the eurozone's bailout fund.

European Union leaders confirmed Friday they have distributed the text of their proposed new budget-stability treaty, a pact designed to deter runaway deficits and supposed to become EU law by March. But as growth prospects fade across the continent, governments are facing the likelihood that Europe's debt crisis will prove longer and tougher to overcome than even their most recently revised forecasts.

Until this week, EU leaders held up Ireland as the model for how a debt-struck nation should behave ? defying economic gravity by simultaneously growing its economy while sucking billions out of that same economy in Europe's longest austerity drive.

But on Friday, Ireland announced its third-quarter gross domestic product fell 1.9 percent, its national product 2.2 percent. Economists had expected only an 0.5 percent fall for GDP and none at all for GNP. The latter figure is considered a better measure of Ireland's economic vitality because it excludes the largely exported profits of about 600 American companies based in the country.

Ireland has been cutting spending and hiking taxes since late 2008 and has plans to keep doing so through 2015. Next year's target is ?2.2 billion ($2.9 billion) in cuts and ?1.6 billion ($2.1 billion) in extra charges, including a hike in national sales tax to 23 percent and introduction of a new ?100 ($131) tax on every property.

But the country's finances this year are seriously out of whack: It is spending ?57 billion ($74.5 billion), including ?10 billion ($13 billion) to keep its five nationalized banks afloat, but collecting just ?34 billion ($44 billion) in taxes.

Labor union leaders say the unexpected slump confirmed Friday is irrefutable evidence that Ireland's 4.5 million citizens already have been squeezed too much, too quickly.

"Current policies are making recovery almost impossible," said David Begg, general secretary of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions. "No economy can sustain the sort of ongoing damage that is being inflicted on us."

"We need growth and we need it quickly," he added.

Ireland's year-old international bailout requires the Irish to reduce their annual deficits from an EU record 32 percent of GDP in 2010 to the traditional eurozone limit of 3 percent by 2015. But analysts agree that Ireland cannot hope to meet the 2015 goal if its economy doesn't grow sufficiently.

Ireland's recovery plan now presumes 1.6 percent growth in 2012 and 2.8 percent growth in each of the next three years ? figures many consider way too optimistic.

Alan McQuaid, chief economist at Bloxham Stockbrokers in Dublin, said Ireland would "do well" to reach 0.5 percent growth this year "given the deteriorating world economic backdrop and the fall-off in global demand." He said he doubted Ireland could top 1 percent growth next year.

In other developments:

ITALY:

The new premier's austerity package passed 495-88 Friday, but lawmakers on both the left and right criticized the pension reforms as too harsh. The plan raises ?30 billion ($39 billion) in extra taxes and pension reforms and plows about ?10 billion ($13 billion) of that back into growth measures.

Prosecutors in the southern region of Calabria, meanwhile, said they were investigating 10 envelopes with bullets inside found in a post office in the town of Lamezia Terme. The envelopes were addressed to the new leader Monti, his labor minister, former Premier Silvio Berlusconi and other top political or media figures, according to the Italian news agency ANSA.

Reports said the envelopes contained notes threatening those named if the austerity package wasn't changed.

GREECE:

European officials told The Associated Press that private holders of Greek bonds were resisting EU efforts to persuade them to take a voluntary 50 percent cut in the value of their holdings. The talks in Paris between EU and Greek leaders against representatives of global banks and hedge funds have been very difficult, they said.

The proposed ?100 billion ($130.6 billion) write-off of privately held Greek bonds is supposed to be agreed upon by early next year ? and it's central to Greece's second bailout deal. Without it, Greece's debt is forecast to escalate to nearly 200 percent of GDP.

SPAIN:

A new conservative government committed to increased austerity is coming into office next week, but it faces a rapidly deteriorating financial outlook.

The Bank of Spain announced a 22 percent surge over the past year in the debts of the country's 17 regional governments to ?135.2 billion ($176.6 billion). Spain's central government debt rose 15 percent to above ?706 billion ($922.3 billion).

PORTUGAL:

The main opposition party refused Friday to support the government's plan to amend the constitution to include a budget-deficit limit. All 17 members of the eurozone are supposed to make such commitments as part of the bloc's week-old plan to enshrine spending controls in a new treaty.

In a further worrying development, ratings agency Standard & Poor's on Friday downgraded the credit rating of six leading Portuguese banks to junk status.

Portugal received its own ?80 billion ($104.5 billion) international bailout deal in April.

US: Va. man surrenders in Vt. lesbian custody case (AP)

MONTPELIER, Vt. ? A Virginia man who federal prosecutors say helped a woman leave the country with her daughter so she wouldn't have to turn custody of the girl over to her former lesbian partner surrendered Tuesday to face charges he aided in international parental kidnapping.

A complaint unsealed Tuesday said Kenneth L. Miller, 46, of Stuarts Draft, Va., arranged passage for Lisa Miller to travel to Canada before flying with her daughter in September 2009 to Nicaragua, where she was sheltered for a time by a group of Mennonite missionaries.

Kenneth Miller appeared in U.S. District Court in Burlington, Vt., on Tuesday and was released, said U.S. Attorney Tristram Coffin, who would provide no further information about the case.

Kenneth Miller's attorney, Brooks McArthur, did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Lisa Miller and Janet Jenkins moved from Virginia to Vermont to be joined in a civil union in 2000. Two years later, Miller gave birth to Isabella, conceived through artificial insemination. The couple split in 2003, with Miller renouncing homosexuality and becoming a Christian.

After the breakup, a judge gave Lisa Miller, whose most recent U.S. address was Bedford, Va., custody of the child but ordered regular visits with Jenkins, who lives in Fair Haven, Vt. Over the course of several years, Miller continued to defy court visitation orders and in 2009 a Vermont judge turned custody of the child over to Jenkins.

Prosecutors say Lisa Miller and the child traveled to Nicaragua in September 2009 before the handover could take place.

Earlier this year, prosecutors indicted an American Mennonite missionary living in Nicaragua, Timothy Miller, on charges of helping Lisa Miller reach Central America. In October, prosecutors dropped the charges against Timothy Miller in exchange for his cooperation.

None of the Millers involved in the case is related.

The affidavit made public Tuesday indicated that Timothy Miller had helped provide the information that led to the charges against Kenneth Miller.

The affidavit says Timothy Miller arranged passage for Lisa Miller and her daughter, paying for the tickets with his mother-in-law's credit card, but Kenneth Miller had told him he would be reimbursed for the price of the tickets.

Lisa Miller and her daughter were last known to be in Nicaragua in March 2010, but the affidavit cites a website "lezgetreal.com" that says Lisa Miller and her daughter were reported to be in Quito, Ecuador, in the fall of 2010.

In the spring of 2010, Lisa Miller was indicted in Vermont on charges of international parental kidnapping.

The latest complaint alleges that Kenneth Miller, a Mennonite pastor, asked another Mennonite pastor from Ontario, whose name was redacted from the affidavit, to meet Lisa Miller and her daughter Isabella, now 11, at a hotel in Niagara, Ontario.

In Ontario, that pastor picked Lisa Miller and her daughter up at the hotel and took them to the airport in Toronto, where they flew to Mexico and then Central America.

If convicted of aiding in international parental kidnapping, Kenneth Miller could be sentenced to three years in prison.
