Claim Manager - Workers' Comp Claims job from Insurance Claims ...

Overview:

Does your claims management job feel stale? A process driven organization can lose sight of the true purpose of managing claims - - good outcomes on each claim. Managing in that processing environment can feel robotic.

Strategic Comp is a growing workers' compensation insurer with dedication to and pride in outstanding claims outcomes. Our profitability proves that our approach works. Most of our strongest competitors over the years, all of them process driven in their claims handling, are no longer in business.

Our approach to claims handling is smart, proactive, well thought out and carefully orchestrated. In order to make sure that this happens on EVERY claim, we need strong managers overseeing the claims process and customer service. The result of this approach is that our renewal retention is outstanding, as is our low employee turnover. Once our clients and employees experience our way of working, they want no substitute.

Strategic Comp is currently searching for a Claim Manager who will be responsible for the oversight and activities of a team of claim professionals. The person hired for this position will be responsible for the day-to-day work and activities of their team. Additionally, the Claim Manager will be responsible for the performance, development and coaching of their staff, including learning and development of their team.

The Claim Manager will primarily work from their home and will be required to travel up to 60% of the time including some overnight travel.

It is important that you include a cover letter along with your resume explaining why you are a fit for this job opening.

Strategic Comp is part of Great American Insurance Company. Established in 1872, the operations of Great American Insurance Group are engaged primarily in property and casualty insurance, focusing on specialty commercial products for businesses, and in the sale of annuities and supplemental insurance products. The members of the Great American Insurance Group are subsidiaries of American Financial Group, Inc. AFG's common stock is listed and traded on the New York Stock Exchange ("NYSE") and NASDAQ under the symbol "AFG".

Responsibilities:

We are looking for a unique person in our claims managers. We need someone who has the ability to help and direct when needed, a group of strong, carefully chosen senior level adjusters to:

- focus on fresh, creative, and quick approaches on every claim

- determine on each claim the need for attorneys, surveillance, and nurse case managers, and then assign, direct, and monitor the vendor

- communicate effectively and develop strong relationships with their team members

- gain buy-in from our insureds regarding the direction each claim is taking, develop a strategy of how to best mitigate the potential loss through interaction with the claimant, and making sure that light duty jobs are available for quick return to work

Qualifications:

- Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 10 years of diverse experience in workers' compensation claims handling.

- Prior significant supervisory experience in multiple states.

- Solid background in coverage analysis, reserving, claims investigation, and litigation management. Prior work with large or national accounts.

Please send us your resume along with a cover letter telling us why you feel that you are a good match for this position.

Physicists must get used to the limelight

The flap over faster-than-light neutrinos will be the first of many

THE affair of the superluminal neutrinos is taking casualties. Two leaders of the OPERA collaboration, which in September announced the detection of neutrinos moving faster than the speed of light in a vacuum, stepped down last week. Both cited mounting tensions within the team after it became clear that the best explanation for OPERA's anomalous result is not novel physics, but experimental error.

That is what most bystanders had expected since the news first broke: physicist Jim Al-Khalili notoriously promised to eat his boxer shorts if the claim was confirmed. But the revelation in February that it might be the result of a malfunctioning clock and a leaky fibre-optic cable nonetheless exposed OPERA to scorn and prompted criticism of its leadership.

In a letter to Le Scienze (the Italian edition of Scientific American), Antonio Ereditato, OPERA's outgoing chairman, defended the approach that the collaboration had taken. But he added that "as a result of the enormous media interest, the OPERA collaboration found itself under anomalous and in some respects irregular pressure, thanks to a series of excessive simplifications of the standard analysis and review process regarding experimental results and their interpretation."

One can sympathise with Ereditato's position, but such a remarkable claim was always bound to attract a huge amount of both public and professional attention. Indeed, a major reason for announcing it at all was so that others might scrutinise it.

Perhaps the only way to have avoided the fuss would have been to keep the result under wraps for even longer than the three years it took to become public. Its flaws might then have been uncovered more discreetly. But word was leaking into the blogosphere; OPERA physics coordinator Dario Autiero, who also stood down, says concealment was untenable.

The personal cost to those at OPERA's helm has been high. But with public interest piqued - witness Higgs hysteria - and big physics becoming ever bigger, the days of carefully stage-managed announcements of rock-solid results are drawing to a close. More such flaps will follow.

Want to run a successful Kickstarter campaign? Start with cinematic genius...

The past year has seen a tremendous growth in crowdfunding of diverse science-themed projects. From Sci-fund, to Petri Dish and Kickstarter, scientists have run successful campaigns worth over $100K overall. As with any kind of competitive field, it?s very important to be able to reach your audience (and potential sponsors) as effectively as possible. What better way to do this than through a great video?

Case in point: The video for the current kickstarter campaign ?The Symbol: Wall Lizards of the Pityusic? by Nathan Dappen and Neil Losin at Day?s Edge Productions. The footage in this video is simply breathtaking ? the colors and sights of these Spanish Islands make you yearn to tag along. Dappen and Losin have already proven to be skilled videographers, having won several awards and competitions with their well-edited and written works (see examples below). Both are biologists, and the current kickstarter project is to raise funds for a photographic guide to the lizards that Dappen studied during his PhD. The lizards themselves are beautiful ? their color variation is vast, and the richness of their appearance is stunningly captured in this video.

?

Dappen and Losin represent an extremely rare combination of scientific knowledge and cinematic talent. I encourage you to check out their other videos, and of course their kickstarter page here. This unique set of talents and determination needs to be recognized. I?ll be looking forward to viewing their next productions!

Battle of the Sexes, a short video about Dappen?s PhD work

?

Another of my favorites, Snakes in a Cave ? amazing footage!

?

I wish them all the best with the campaign!

ScienceOnline2012 interview with Rebecca Guenard

Every year I ask some of the attendees of the ScienceOnline conferences to tell me (and my readers) more about themselves, their careers, current projects and their views on the use of the Web in science, science education or science communication. So now we continue with the participants of ScienceOnline2012. See all the interviews in this series here.

Today my guest is Rebecca Guenard (blog, Twitter).

Welcome to A Blog Around The Clock. Would you, please, tell my readers a little bit more about yourself? Where are you coming from (both geographically and philosophically)? What is your background? Any scientific education?

Hi, I?m Rebecca Guenard. I currently live outside of Philadelphia, PA with my husband and our two boys.

I have loved math and science for as long as I can remember. I have a B.S. and a Ph.D. in Chemistry.

I spent a year working for the chemical industry where I learned I was better suited for academia.

Tell us a little more about your career trajectory so far: interesting projects past and present?

I began my career in academia as an adjunct while we started our family. Then I took a permanent teaching position at Temple University. I worked at Temple for five years, teaching the large freshman lectures, as well as upper division courses for majors. At the same time I conducted research, sort of a nontraditional postdoc. My aim was to seek a tenure track position, but the needs of my family were such that I left Temple to work independently from home. Now I am part-time cruise director and part-time science writer.

The transition from academia was tough, I had been in hallowed halls since I was 17 years old. I had grown attached to the structure of the academic system. So I took a few years to concentrate on kids and figure out life outside that hierarchy. I kept my hand in chemistry while I privately tutored, but I opened myself up to new experiences. I volunteered for an organization that needed help improving communications. The experience taught me a lot and gave me the confidence to combine chemistry and communications, as I had originally intended when I left Temple.

Science writing is another form of teaching. A 50 minute lecture for a freshman class is a kind of performance; there is an entertainment factor associated with it. This is especially true for chemistry because students tend to be intimidated by the subject. A good chemistry professor pulls students in, settles their fears and while their attention is gripped shoves in as much curriculum as they can.

I have the same philosophy when I communicate science with the written word.

What is taking up the most of your time and passion these days? What are your goals?

Currently, most of my time is taken up with telling stories. I developed a blog called atomic-o-licious last summer which I am using to feel my way through science communications.

I am interested in accessibility. If you want to read science content you have hundreds of options. If you seek it out you will find it. But there are so many people who never seek out science. Maybe they are busy or intimidated, for whatever the reason science isn?t a priority. There is an extensive audience that needs to be offered different bait. It is that audience I seek with atomic-o-licious.

I would love for my blog to be like a Dave Barry column which attracts readers because it is entertaining, it makes them laugh. But there is a bonus, science is folded in among the humor.

Every day I can pull a story from my life and relate it to chemistry; I see the world through chemistry-colored glasses. And most days life just cracks me up. What a dream to have an outlet for combining the two!

Chemistry is a tough subject; readers are naturally drawn to life sciences, chemistry tends to drive people away. But I am going to draw them, gosh darnnit.

One of my goals is to expand my readership. It is creeping up slowly. I am grateful for the receptiveness of the science writing community, and I look forward to reaching a broader audience.

I am also continually pitching stories to mainstream publications to get my name in print and out to a non-science audience which might be enticed back to my blog (plus I wouldn?t mind getting paid).

What aspect of science communication and/or particular use of the Web in science interests you the most?

The Web is full of amazing science resources. Since I am most interested in creating a narrative, in telling a good story, I am focused on blogs right now. I also like blogs for aggregating information. Social media makes it so easy to share new, interesting research that is written about on blogs.

I also like the idea of having a YouTube channel, a place to create chem videos, but I need time to formulate the goals of such a channel.

How does (if it does) blogging figure in your work? How about social networks, e.g., Twitter, Google Plus and Facebook? Do you find all this online activity to be a net positive (or even a necessity) in what you do?

Aside from being a form of science communication, I view my blog as a portfolio. If you take the whole body of work hopefully you can see that I am growing and learning in the craft of science writing.

I would have zero readership without social networks. They are vital to expanding science communication. I like that social networks connect me to other science communicators.

I had a narrow view of science prior to social networks. There was the research I was doing and the research papers that I read that were close to what I was doing; who had time for anything else. With social networks I am connected to people with different backgrounds and interests and through our network they bring what they are studying to me. It is a process that still amazes me. I am exposed to so much more than I ever was before social networks.

When and how did you first discover science blogs? What are some of your favourites? Have you discovered any cool science blogs by the participants at the Conference?

The Loom is probably the first science blog I discovered, but I can?t remember how I came across it. Prior to that I mostly read science in print and on news sites. But until recently, when I came out from under my chem prof bell jar, I was oblivious to how much was available.

I ricochet throughout the web daily. I mostly visit blogs within science blog networks or stories that are brought to my attention on Twitter.

What was the best aspect of ScienceOnline2012 for you? Any suggestions for next year? Is there anything that happened at this Conference ? a session, something someone said or did or wrote ? that will change the way you think about science communication, or something that you will take with you to your job, blog-reading and blog-writing?

Every aspect of the conference changed the way I think about science communication. I was trained to hold on tight to information. Some of the research projects I was on were industry collaborations so the research results were proprietary, but also science is a competitive environment in which to be raised. Knowledge is power, you don?t relinquish it, that is the message that gets whispered in your ear.

There is a lesson to be learned from the difficulty the scientific community has had relaying the importance of climate change. We can?t just keep the general public out of scientific research and expect that they will suddenly snap into compliance when we discover something troublesome. Climate scientists have had to spend precious years explaining how they know what they know about climate change instead of taking steps to stop it.

This issue coupled with social media has developed a new breed of scientists who understand the need for the open communication of research. I am having to play catch-up and unlearn my training. This conference was an invaluable aid in taking those steps. All of the openness was weird at first, the twitter followers, the conference wikispace, the open access conference schedule. I felt exposed. But I met people I wouldn?t even have made eye contact with at another conference.

I had many interactions with people at scio12 that have influenced my work. I spoke with journalism veterans who gave me concrete advice on finding narratives, maintaining blogs and refining stories. I also talked to people who have been blogging longer than me and graciously extended their advice, encouragement, and support. It was a wonderful experience. I look forward to scio13!

Thank you for the interview. Hope to see you next year!

Liberation struggle of the people of Assam and NE India

Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury - 3/30/2012

Since Bangladesh Awami League formed government in 2009 [January] with a huge mandate of the people [though the result of this election has been greatly questioned by the political opponents of Bangladesh Awami League], there has been visibly sign of current Bangladesh government actively participating in combating any ???separatist movement??? within the North-Eastern region in India. It is also documented and undocumented that a large number of suspected leaders and activists of United Liberation Front of Assam [ULFA] as well as many other organizations, seeking independence from New Delhi, were arrested inside Bangladesh and secretly handed over to Indian authorities. Especially following the secret handing over of Arabinda Rajkhowa to Indian authorities by the Bangladeshi government, the matter of Bangladesh Awami League government???s hidden cooperation with Indian authorities in combating ???insurgency??? within that country got fully exposed in public, though Bangladeshi authorities denied the fact of arrest and handing over of Arabinda Rajkhowa and some of his comrades to Indian authorities. But later, Indian government as well as Indian media in other words, put the ruling party in Bangladesh into highest discomfort when it disclosed that on late night of 30 November 2009, Bangladesh Police arrested Rajkhowa somewhere near Dhaka. He has been handed over to the Indian authorities. On December 5, 2009, Rajkhowa along with his bodyguard Raja Baruah and the outfit's deputy C-in-C Raju Baruah were produced before Robin Phukan, the chief judicial magistrate, Kamrup, Assam. Later it was rumored that Indian government were negotiating with arrested Arabinda Rajkhowa and his comrades and they were even provided cell phones inside the prison to communicate with people within and outside India for the sake of achieving Indian authority???s goal in killing the movement of independence in Assam as well as other parts of North-Eastern province.

Meanwhile section of Indian media rumored that Arabinda Rajkhowa voluntarily surrendered to Indian police. When Rajkhowa and his comrades were produced before the court, Arabinda Rajkhowa rubbished police's claim that they had surrendered.

???We have not surrendered, we will never surrender", he claimed.

Hearing the statement from Arabinda Rajkhowa, thousands of people cheered chanting slogans - "Surrender nokoribo" [Do not surrender], "Rajkhowa Zindabad" [Long line Rajkhowa] or ???ULFA Zindabad??? [Long live ULFA].

But at a later stage, when Arabinda Rajkhowa was released on bail from the Guwahati Central Jail on January 1, 2011, when he was granted bail by a special TADA court after the government prosecutor raised no objection to Rajkhowa???s bail petition, it was crystal clear to many that the Indian authorities have been successful in having a behind-the-jail ???deal??? with Arabinda Rajkhowa and his comrades, who gave assurances to Indian government of ???killing the anti New Delhi insurgency??? in Assam and later in the North-Eastern region.

After getting Arabinda Rajkhowa and his comrades from Bangladesh authorities, Indian government has been continuously putting pressure on the ruling party in Dhaka to handover imprisoned ULFA leader Anup Chetia and two of his comrades Laxmi Prasad and Babul Sharma. Even during the recent visit of Bangladeshi home minister to New Delhi, the issue of handing over Anup Chetia, Laxmi Prasad and Babul Sharma came at the top of the agenda. Earlier a number of times it was rumored that Bangladesh was set in handing over Anup Chetia to Indian authorities.

Bangladeshi home minister advocate Sahara Khatun said, ???Top Ulfa leader Anup Chetia, currently lodged in a Dhaka jail, will be handed over to India by Bangladesh immediately after the legal process involving his deportation is over in that country.???

She said, ???Bangladesh was committed to handover Anup Chetia to Indian authorities.???

Anup Chetia alias Golap Baruah is the Secretary General of the United Liberation Front of Assam is in Bangladeshi prison since he was arrested in Dhaka on December 21, 1997 under the Foreigner???s Act and Passports Act for illegally carrying foreign currencies and satellite phone. Bangladesh court imprisoned him for seven years and currently he is locked inside Kashimpur Jail near Dhaka city. Since his arrest in 1997, the Government of India has asked Bangladesh to extradite Chetia. The request was refused by Bangladesh on the ground that the two countries do not have an extradition treaty. After making numerous bids in getting Anup Chetia extradited to India, recently New Delhi has signed extradition treaty with Dhaka, which is believed to have been done in enabling the India-friendly ruling party in Bangladesh in handing over Anup Chetia and few of ULDA leaders, who are still inside Bangladeshi prison.

On December 7, 2008, Chetia had written to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees urging it to grant him refugee status and political asylum in Bangladesh. In a letter to António Guterres, head of the Geneva based UNHCR, Chetia pleaded that he had already completed seven years of imprisonment and hence was no longer a convict to be held in a jail. ULFA also appealed for political asylum in a safe country.

Though Indian authorities believe that following their secret negotiations with ULFA leader Arabinda Rajkhowa and others have already opened the scope for them in ???eliminating the insurgency in Assam???, which they believe will reach its final stage, when Bangladesh government would handover Anup Chetia to New Delhi, liberation movement analysts reject such desire of the Indian authorities terming it as wild dream. They feel, no liberation movement in the world could ever be eliminated or uprooted by any authorities simply by arresting, capturing or even murdering the front-ranking leaders. They said, once the people will see no one at the top leadership to lead them in attaining independence, they will then choose their new leaders who would ultimately lead them to victory. During the war of independence of Bangladesh, the Pakistani government planted their agents inside the Bengali nation as well as arrested Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and brought him inside West Pakistan prison. But, such actions finally did not help the Pakistani government in stopping the road to victory of the Bengali people and the creation of independent Bangladesh.

???No war of liberation goes into vein and the freedom struggle of the people of Assam will also bring independence for them ??? one day???, they opined.

Causes of Hair Loss in Women ? SEO Article Directory

?Alopecia, commonly known as hair loss, can be very hard to accept and deal with especially for females. However, determining the true causes of this distressful condition and understanding all of it can certainly help in preventing baldness or perhaps alleviate its severity.

The Most Prevalent Cause of Hair Loss in Women

Normally, women?s bodies act differently than men?s; genetics is proven to be the basic cause of hair loss in men; hairloss in women, on the other hand, is actually caused by hormonal disorders. Sudden changes in hormone levels, such as those observed with pregnancy, menopause, thyroid conditions, and inconsistent consumption of birth control pills can cause temporary hair fall in women.

Women have certain hormones in their bodies like oestrogen or testosterone; these hairloss in womenhormones are sometimes produced immoderately or their production is decreased. In turn, certain changes in the body can result to hairloss. A great example of this is when a woman gives birth to a baby. When this occurs, her hormones can enter a resting phase while the body returns to its pre-pregnancy condition. During this period, typically three to six months after giving birth, she may start to notice an increase in hair shedding. Medical experts advise women not to worry as such type of hair loss in women is usually temporary and has the potential to correct itself.

Other Causes of HairLoss

Hairloss can also be caused by several factors like elevated physical and emotional stress, crash diets, illness, harmful hair care techniques, and malnutrition. Other women spend more time in styling their hair, and sometimes are being overhandled. This can be a common cause for hairloss. Hair care techniques such as perming, bleaching, and colouring can cause much damage to the hair follicles and can cause hairloss. Using different brands of shampoos and other hair care products can trigger loss as well and so can wearing of tight hairstyles like ponytails, weaves and braids.

A factor that is considered to be a common cause of alopecia in women is poor diet or malnutrition. Women who engage in a low nutrition diet and lose weight too quickly can endure temporary hair loss because the body needs sufficient nutrients like protein, zinc, and fatty acids to promote healthy hair growth. In other cases of hair loss in women, heredity or genetics is inextricably linked to such condition. Androgenic alopecia or female pattern baldness is indeed a hereditary condition that results from the conversion of the hormone testosterone into dihydrotestosterone or DHT with the aid of the 5-alpha reductase enzyme in the body. DHT attacks the hair follicles and causes permanent baldness.

Treatments for women are usually topical serums. More and more hair restoration experts recommend women to acquire hair loss products that contain natural or herbal ingredients like the saw palmetto extracts as this is clinically tested and proven to stop further hair loss whatever the cause is and is perceived to stimulate significant hair regrowth. A sought-after brand that specializes in hair loss prevention that uses nothing but natural ingredients is Leimo. For more details, please check out Leimo Hair Loss in Women.

Obama says enough world oil to crack down on Iran

BURLINGTON, Vt./WASHINGTON | Fri Mar 30, 2012 6:20pm EDT

BURLINGTON, Vt./WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama vowed on Friday to forge ahead with tough sanctions on Iran, saying there was enough oil in the world market - including emergency stockpiles - to allow countries to cut Iranian imports.

In his decision, required by a sanctions law he signed in December, Obama said increased production by some countries as well as "the existence of strategic reserves" helped him come to the conclusion that sanctions can advance.

"I will closely monitor this situation to assure that the market can continue to accommodate a reduction in purchases of petroleum and petroleum products from Iran," he said in a statement.

Obama had been expected to press on with the sanctions to pressure Iran to curb its nuclear program, which the West suspects is a cover to develop atomic weapons but which Iran says is purely civilian.

The overt mention of government-controlled stockpiles may further stoke speculation that major consumer nations are preparing to tap their emergency stores this year.

"I do think it was interesting that it was laid out there," said David Pumphrey, an analyst at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

"It was sort of like a reminder that yes, this is part of the tool kit," said Pumphrey, a former Energy Department official.

NO DECISION ON STRATEGIC RELEASE

Oil markets remain tight, the White House said. Surging gasoline prices have become a major issue in the presidential election campaign.

"A series of production disruptions in South Sudan, Syria, Yemen, Nigeria, and the North Sea have removed oil from the market," the White House said in a statement.

France is in talks with the United States and Britain on a possible release of strategic oil stocks to push fuel prices lower, French ministers said on Wednesday.

Senior Obama administration officials told reporters that the United States views releasing emergency stocks as an option, but said no decision has been made on specific actions.

Oil prices briefly rallied by about 70 cents on the announcement, but later reversed gains to end almost flat as traders turned mindful of the possible use of reserves.

"There's been a shift from focus on a threat (by Iran) to close the Strait of Hormuz to whether or not reserves are going to be released," said Dominick Caglioti, a broker at Frontier Trading Co. in New York.

PUTS IMPORTERS ON NOTICE

Going forward, Obama is required by law to determine every six months whether the price and supply of non-Iranian oil are sufficient to allow consumers to "significantly" cut their purchases from Iran.

The law allows Obama, after June 28, to sanction foreign banks that carry out oil-related transactions with Iran's central bank and effectively cut them off from the U.S. financial system.

"Today, we put on notice all nations that continue to import petroleum or petroleum products from Iran that they have three months to significantly reduce those purchases or risk the imposition of severe sanctions on their financial institutions," said Senator Robert Menendez, co-author of the sanctions law.

Obama can offer exemptions to countries that show they have "significantly" cut their purchases from Iran, and recently exempted Japan and 10 EU countries from the sanctions.

A senior administration official told reporters that talks continue with China, India, South Korea and other importers.

"Each day I think really we see a number of positive indicators from a broad range of countries," the official said, citing an announcement by Turkey on Friday that it would cut imports of oil from Iran by 10 percent as an example.

NEW SANCTIONS IN THE WORKS

Obama faces a delicate balancing act on Iran, leading up to November U.S. general election. On the one hand, he must show voters he is being tough on the Islamic state.

But with oil and gasoline prices surging in response to geopolitical risks, he must also avoid steps that would unduly rattle oil markets. That could threaten the global economy and hurt voters already angered by the rising cost of fuel.

Obama also faces pressure from some lawmakers in Congress who want to make sanctions on Iran even tighter. The House of Representatives has already passed additional sanctions, and a bill is pending in the Senate.

Senior administration officials briefing reporters declined comment on the proposed new sanctions.

"We welcome the president's determination and applaud the administration's faithful implementation of the Menendez-Kirk amendment," said a spokesman for Senator Mark Kirk, a Republican who has pushed for additional measures.

"To build on this momentum, we hope the Senate will consider amendments to the pending Iran sanctions bill that would continue to increase the economic pressure on the Iranian regime," Kirk's spokesman said.
