Google to open online tablet store: report

SAN FRANCISCO?? Google is planning to open an online store to sell tablet PCs directly to consumers, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal on Thursday.

The online store would offer tablets made by Samsung Electronics and Asustek Computer based on Google's Android software, according to the report, which cited anonymous sources and which Reuters was not able to confirm. Google declined to comment.

Google briefly sold a specially-designed Android smartphone - the Nexus One - directly to consumers in 2010, but closed the store after four months saying it had not lived up to expectations.

Google now relies on retail and carrier partners to sell Android smartphones made by a variety of handset makers and Android has become the world's No. 1 smartphone operating system, ahead of iPhone-maker Apple.

But Apple still dominates the market for touch-screen tablet computers with its two-year old iPad. Amazon.com's $199 Kindle Fire tablet is based on open-source Android computer code, but the device features a customized interface that does not use many Google services.

Google may co-brand some of the tablets sold through the store and has considered subsidizing the cost of future tablets to make them more competitive with the Kindle Fire, according to the Journal report. It is unclear when Google plans to open the store.

This year?s performance, like last year, and the year before, was a grand set-piece event. But since the prime minister had seen the questions in advance, he and his aides had had plenty of time to formulate bland and unexceptional answers to all of them.

Luckily for us, though, at the end of the three-hour press conference at which the didactic Wen took an average of 13 minutes to answer a question, a cheeky Reuters correspondent ducked the rules. He asked the question that he had flagged in advance ? an anodyne inquiry about the level of local government debt ? and then snuck in a second question about a disgraced police chief who has sparked a scandal that has embroiled one of China?s most high-profile politicians, Bo Xilai.(?read more about that here)

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Historic guitars from Les Paul's personal collection and recording equipment owned by the pioneering musician will be sold at auction.

Celebrity auctioneer Darren Julien says the sale includes rare guitars, effects pedals, mixing consoles and the grand piano from Paul's home recording studio. Julien's Auctions in Beverly Hills will host the sale over three days, including what would have been Paul's 97th birthday: June 9.

A guitarist and inventor, Paul developed one of the first solid-body electric guitars ? released commercially in 1952 as the Gibson Les Paul ? as well as the technology behind modern multi-track recording. He is recognized in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum and the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

The auction benefits the Les Paul Foundation.

Chevrolet replacing 120-volt power cords on most Volt automobiles

If you're one of the 10,000 or so folks who pay insurance on a Chevrolet Volt, you may have a new cable coming your way. According to The Detroit News and Yahoo! Autos, General Motors will soon be sending out replacement 120-volt charging cords for Volt automobiles, which are said to "offer some more consistency in charging," while also making it more durable. We're told that some of the newfangled chargers have shipped with recent Volts, but the majority of customers were sent home with the older model. Of note, GM won't be swapping out any of those optional 240-volt cords, and the company won't consider this a recall or safety issue. As for getting your replacement? Owners are slated to be notified directly in the "next few weeks."

China Censors Coup Rumors - Business Insider

A few days ago we reported on how word of a Chinese coup attempt had soured the markets, following a ?report from the Epoch Times.

Rumor had it that tanks were in the streets, and gunshots were being fired near the Forbidden City.

While the news is supposed to be false, the BBC says they actually have no idea what's going on and The Daily Mail reports China has scrubbed its Internet of all reports, rumors, and speculation of what's happening on the ground. In response to the censorship Chinese bloggers are assigning code words to the key players in the political saga that are nearly impossible to block.

BusinessDay reports:

Bloggers have tried to get round this by referring to Mr Zhou as "Master Kong" ? a brand of instant noodles ? because the names share a common character in Chinese.

"Played too big, Master Kong is now in trouble," posted one weibo user under the name Engineer Zhongyu.

And while the pictures of tanks and armored cars in the streets of Beijing that immediately followed the news appear to be from old military parades, what's surprising experts is how much prominence the rumors received, and how far they've spread.

The BBC admits that "these are not normal times in China." The country is preparing itself for its once-a-decade realignment of its senior leadership, and there is plenty of infighting to fuel speculation.

The reality of the past few weeks has been that China has been gripped by some of the most extraordinary political events in years, and they indicate significant political tensions beneath the surface.?It began in early February with the flight of Wang Lijun, deputy mayor and police chief of Chongqing to the US consulate in Chengdu where he sought asylum.

The fallout hit his boss, Bo Xilai, the populist Communist Party chief of Chongqing, member of the ruling Politburo and aspirant for one of the very top jobs in the leadership reshuffle later this year.?His dismissal came after China's Premier Wen Jiabao publicly reprimanded Mr Bo, warning "such historical tragedies as the Cultural Revolution may happen again".

The Daily Mail followed up reports on China's microblogging websites Sina, Weibo, QQ Weibo, and the search engine Baidu, which all reported "abnormalities" on March 19, but there is no longer any trace of the news. While unable to confirm the reports, The Mail says the rumors have caused a "speculative and nervous atmosphere in the [Chinese] capital."

The Epoch Times looked to the Chinese regime's Global Times for details on the situation and found an editorial published Thursday?calling for the CCP's "highest authorities" to clarify what exactly is going on.?

Published in Chinese, the Epoch Times goes on to explain the editorial reveals confusion about who is actually in charge, and what the status is of the party's current leadership.

Vatican: Pope's Cuba trip should help democracy

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? The Vatican's No. 2 has dismissed suggestions that Cuba's Communist government could exploit Pope Benedict XVI's upcoming trip as a propaganda tool, saying the visit should help promote democracy on the island.

Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican's secretary of state, said he expects an outpouring of support for the pope because he is the head of the Catholic Church and that the visit will only make things better for the Cuban church.

"I don't believe the visit will be exploited by the government," Bertone told the Turin daily La Stampa in an interview published Thursday. "In fact, I think the government and Cuban people will do their utmost to welcome the pope and show him the esteem and trust that the leader of the Catholic Church deserves."

Benedict, 84, leaves Friday for a six-day trip that will take him first to Mexico, then to Cuba on March 26. It's Benedict's first trip to Spanish-speaking Latin America, and Pope John Paul II's shadow will be looming large, given his five visits to Mexico, which claimed the Polish pope as its own, and his historic 1998 trip to Cuba.

The Colorado Center on Law and Policy got feedback from more than 700 Coloradans around the state to see what features they?d like to see that would make insurance shopping easier.

?The problem right now is that it?s really hard to find the health insurance plan that?s right for you,? Director Danny Katz said. ?The way to do that is to create a one-stop shop website.?

Katz said one strong opinion was people don?t want an automated phone system.

?The bottom line was they want to talk to somebody. They want to communicate with an individual in some way when they get to a point where they?re going to need to ask some questions,? Katz said.

Sarah McGuire is a student at the University of Colorado at Denver who helped organize several forums for students who may soon find themselves in her situation.

?The first benefit for young people is being able to stay on their parents? insurance until the age of 26,? McGuire said. ?That?s be crucial for a lot of people who I know on campus.?

The feedback was presented to a small group of people who were involved in the project ? but next it will go to board members with the Health Benefit Exchange to help them mold the final features of this insurance marketplace.
